Why Leap Years Are Used

This page provides the history of the leap year and the purpose it serves.
Source: Time and date.com

February 29, 2008The year 2008 is a leap year. If you look at a 2008 calendar, you will see that February has five Fridays–the month begins and ends on a Friday. Between the years 1904 and 2096, leap years that share the same day of week for each date repeat only every 28 years. The most recent year in which February comprised five Fridays was in 1980, and the next occurrence will be in 2036. February 29, the leap day, has been associated with age-old traditions, superstitions and folklore.

What is a leap year?

A leap year is a year in which one extra day has been inserted, or intercalated, at the end of February. A leap year consists of 366 days, whereas other years, called common years, have 365 days.

Which years are leap years?

In the Gregorian calendar, the calendar used by most modern countries, the following three criteria determine which years will be leap years:

1.) Every year that is divisible by four is a leap year;
2.) of those years, if it can be divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless
3.) the year is divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

According to the above criteria, that means that years 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years, while year 2000 and 2400 are leap years.

It is interesting to note that 2000 was somewhat special as it was the first instance when the third criterion was used in most parts of the world.

In the Julian calendar–introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC and patterned after the Roman calendar–there was only one rule: any year divisible by four would be a leap year. This calendar was used before the Gregorian calendar was adopted.

Why are leap years needed?

Leap years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth's revolutions around the sun.

Details:

The Earth's motion around the sun

The vernal equinox is the time when the sun is directly above the Earth's equator, moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere.

The mean time between two successive vernal equinoxes is called a tropical year–also known as a solar year–and is about 365.2422 days long.

Using a calendar with 365 days every year would result in a loss of 0.2422 days, or almost six hours per year. After 100 years, this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the season (tropical year), which is not desirable or accurate. It is desirable to align the calendar with the seasons and to make any difference as insignificant as possible.

By adding a leap year approximately every fourth year, the difference between the calendar and the seasons can be reduced significantly, and the calendar will align with the seasons much more accurately.

(The term "day" is used to mean "solar day"–which is the mean time between two transits of the sun across the meridian of the observer.)

Other leap years facts

1.) The Gregorian calendar has a 400-year cycle until it repeats the same weekdays for every year–February 29, 2008, is a Friday and February 29, 2408, is a Friday.
2.) The Gregorian calendar has 97 leap years during those 400 years.
The longest time between two leap years is eight years.

3.) The last time that occurred was between 1896 and 1904. The next time will be between 2096 and 2104.

Paypal to Bank Account

9:41 AM / Comments (6) / by {C-Q Family}

I've been searching the internet for testimonies or comments regarding Paypal withdrawal to Bank account/s in the Philippines and I've been jumping from one website to another hoping that I could get a detailed explanation or information but none satisfied my queries.

My wife (chikai - BLOGSILOG) and I decided that in order for us to know this kind of transaction, we have to go over and experience it personally. And glad to know that all the transactions we did went well as expected, though there were some problems along the way... we still manage to complete the process.

Sharing herewith are the information we come along and might be useful for your future "Paypaling":

TO ACQUIRE A VERIFIED PAYPAL ACCOUNT

1.) Visit PAYPAL to apply an account for FREE

2.) Apply an EON VISA ELECTRON Debit Card at UNIONBANK and have it activated. Make sure you will have at least P200.00 initial deposit in preparation for your first paypal transaction. Request for the Expanded Use Program fron Unionbank in order to complete Paypal Verification System. This process will take you 7 - 14 days to complete.

3.) You can also use your current and active Bank account. In my case I have an International ATM Savings Account from Banco de Oro and an ATM Savings Account from EPCIB-BDO.

4.) When the above mentioned details are available, open your paypal account and link your EON VISA ELECTRON by clicking on the PROFILE then CREDIT/DEBIT Card link. For BANK ACCOUNT/S you personally have, just click PROFILE and then ADD or Edit Bank Account.

5.) Once checked and approved by Paypal then you are now a VERIFIED PAYPAL USER.

TO WITHDRAW MONEY FROM PAYPAL

There are only two (2) things to remember in withdrawing your money. The Fees and the Bank Account.

Consider the following:

1.) Fees: Unionbank Visa Electron Debit Card - $5.00 per transaction with $500 as the maximum daily withdrawal.

2.) Fees: Banco de Oro or EPCIB - Service Fee of P200 per transaction irregardless of the Amount. Paypal charges NO WITHDRAWAL FEE if the amount is P7,000 or more and P50.00 charge for P6,999 and below. However, there is a P200 charge for Paypal withdrawal to Banco de Oro (BDO). I don't know with the other banks of how much is their charges for PAYPAL Remittances.

I emailed Banco de Oro (BDO) customer representative asking what the P200 is all about, here is the reply:

We wish to inform you that the following service fees will be charged from the gross amount received by BDO for inward remittances (which may take the form of a bank draft, telegraphic transfer, mail transfer or check) and for local inward telegraphic transfers:

INWARD REMITTANCE

1. US Dollar remittances received and to be credited to a US Dollar account- Service charge is USD 5.00

2. US Dollar remittances received and to be credited to a Peso account- Service charge is Php 100.00 + documentary stamps If the remittance was not directly sent through a BDO correspondent bank or tie-up, there might be additional fees charged by the intermediary banks. Unfortunately, we don't have any information as to how much an intermediary bank charges for an inward remittance.

LOCAL INWARD TELEGRAPHIC TRANSFER

1. P200.00

Paypal, as we all know is the most and widely used electronic payment system in other countries and now in the Philippines. Of course, once electronic there is always the risk of losing your money..... so be careful and keep all information CONFIDENTIAL ALWAYS.

Movie: Alvin and the Chipmunks

Have you seen the film ALVIN and the CHIPMUNKS from the 20th Century Fox and Regency? You better rush and watch it at the nearest theaters in your area. You will surely have fun watching the movie with your family, kids or loved ones.

Just watched the film a while ago with my wife and we enjoyed watching it. The story is so simple but it can surely touch the hearts of most of the viewers. If we are going to view the movie in a technological perspective, the way they created the chipmunks and incorporate it to the real people moving.... very real. Two thumbs up for the people who digitally created the characters of Alvin, Simon and Theodore.

Here's the full trailer of the movie I mentioned above:

Maximizing Nokia N80 Internet Edition

7:41 AM / Comments (1) / by {C-Q Family}

The Nokia N80 is a multimedia 3G smartphone made by Nokia with support for high-speed UMTS/WCDMA connections. Features include a 3-megapixel camera with built-in flash (on the back of the device), another camera (on the front) for videoconferencing, Wi-Fi (802.11g), Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), FM radio, Bluetooth 1.2, digital music player functionality, MiniSD memory card slot, and support for 3D Java games. Because of its memory card and relatively large screen, it can function as a portable media player.

It uses the third edition of the Series 60 user interface (S60v3) and the Symbian operating system version 9.1. It is not backward compatible with software compiled for earlier versions of the Symbian operating system.

Of the features listed, Nokia N80's Wi-Fi (802.11g) functionality and its customizable software system makes this mobile phone an even more powerful. Yes, my Nokia N80 is not just for doing SMS/MMS, playing music or capturing memories. It has more! Calling abroad for FREE or in a cheapest rates via the internet is just one of its usefulness. I also installed softwares that are needed in my day to day errands.

How to make a call for FREE? Simple! But before doing so, you need to install a VOIP Software for mobile phones. In my case, I use Truphone. To any internet HOTSPOTS you can launch TRUPHONE and make an Internet Call. To know more about this just visit on their website.

Nokia N80 IE as an internet modem? Yes, you can access the internet using your Nokia N80ie. Here in the Philippines, I am using the SMART On-The-Air Access. Its technology uses 3G, HSPDA and GPRS. The rate is very affordable, with P10 per 30mins block. Talking of its speed? Well, it is 3x to 4x Faster than a Dial-up. Really good for those people who are always on the Go.

Another good functionality of this mobile phone is its customizable software system, you can install any compatible softwares or games. I installed the following tools for my day to day jobs: Mobile Medical Dictionary; Concise English Dictionary for Symbian OS; eBuddyBeta (for my mobile yahoo chat); KJV Go Bible Dictionary; jIRC (for IRC activities) and Mobile World Clock.

The things that I mentioned are not limited to Nokia N80IE phones alone. There are lots of mobile phone models from Nokia that has the same functionalities and features. Go and visit their website product list.

Of course, before deciding to alter your phone's full feature you need to have a FAST Internet connection and the following tools: Desktop/Laptop Computer with Latest Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater installed and a CA-53 USB Cable.

Note: Try all these at your own risk. Not all that works with my N80ie work on yours too.

"The Tools"

9:15 AM / Comments (1) / by {C-Q Family}

Everyone of us bloggers, of course, do have their own tools or equipment or even gadgets to use in order to make a good post or a nice entry. However, not knowing the maximum capacity of each tools or gadgets on hand would clearly mean a neglected element on your post.

As for me being a neophyte in this blogosphere, I admit that sooner or later I will be experiencing difficulties in posting my entries. Not that I don’t know anything about gadgets or computers. In fact, I do have a broader knowledge and a wide experience when it comes to computers (entries of such will also be posted in this site). But maybe more of the "thoughts hardly converted into words". So Help me God. ;-)

Ok, among those devices and tools that are widely available in the market, the following are the ones that will assist me in creating a quality and more comprehensive entries:

- Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop
- Intel Pentium IV Desktop Computer
- Nokia N80 Internet Edition Cellphone

Just click on the link to know more of the specification and features. On the next entries, I will share to you how I maximized the capacity of these tools and their features as well.
